Volunteering at Tuisyen Sayang with NALS
NALS Cares 2.0 was a collaboration between NALS 2017 committee with the people of Projek Ihsan. Projek Ihsan is a non-government organisation (NGO) whose aim is to complement the schooling education with their own tutoring and mentoring programme called Tuisyen Sayang which is a weekly class for primary and high school students. Tuisyen Sayang is a joint effort by a group of volunteers for the development of education for underprivileged students.
NALS 2017 was lucky to be able to spend some time with the students to help improve their academic and non-academic skills. We went to Surau Hamiddean in Seksyen 19, Shah Alam on the 24th September 2016 and had some fun with the students. The NALS Cares 2.0 team conducted some in-group activities to encourage the students to speak English and be more creative and confident. The facilitators interacted with students ranging from 7 to 14 years old. Interestingly, even the 12-year-olds who had finished UPSR examination came as well! It goes to show just how impactful Tuisyen Sayang is to the local community in Seksyen 19, Shah Alam.
At the end of the day, we could see improvements in the students, from being shy to more confident and outspoken. A half-day program couldn’t change the students drastically, but it sure did boost up their spirits to never stop learning and keep on striving for a better future.
